This book is for everyone, yes for everyone!! So do not make the mistake of ignoring it.

Most of us are engineers and some are not. Irrespective of our careers, in day to day life we encounter problems and solve(very loosely framed here) it.

For those of us who are developers, designers,

architects, so on and so forth we take pride in solving problems.

George. Polya’s book is based on the fact that, if we study how someone does something successfully, we can learn to do it successfully as well. How To Solve It is an application of ‘heuristics’ to solving problems.

There are certain mental operations useful in solving problems, any sorts of problems. Polya (who was an eminent mathematician and former Professor of Mathematics at Stanford University) describes and illustrates the most usual and useful of these operations, in a way that is irresistible and eye-opening.

If you are mentoring any young brains, then pass this book along.

There are many questions which fools can ask that wise men cannot answer.

Return to Mathematical Circles (Boston 1988).
